But don’t expect your typical nightclub experience here. Looking for Cancún’s spring break party scene? In March and April the Hotel Zone’s bars and nightclubs draw partygoers of all ages until the wee hours of the morning. For calmer waters, head to beaches along Mujeres Bay at the Hotel Zone’s northern end, where conditions are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Beaches like Playa Delfines and Playa Chac-Mool attract sunbathers and surfers, but swimming is often dangerous due to rough waves and riptides. Some of Cancún’s most famous beaches are along the Hotel Zone’s Caribbean side, where the soft sand and views of aquamarine water can’t be beat. It’s also one of the best places to enjoy Cancún’s legendary sun, sand and surf. An elbow-shaped sandbar more than 14 miles long but just a quarter-mile wide, the Hotel Zone is a mix of upscale hotels, all-inclusive resorts, hotel spas, popular nightlife, trendy shopping areas and bustling souvenir markets. Most visitors are content to spend their time on Cancún Island (Isla Cancún), commonly known as the Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera). Dollars are routinely accepted, and stateside franchises like Starbucks are fairly easy to find. The English language is commonplace in Cancún, although Spanish might be spoken first. Its prime location - at the northeastern tip of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula - gives travelers a taste of both the Caribbean and Mexico, along with plenty of American comforts. Paradise Awaits Cancún today is a leisure destination for families, honeymooners, spring breakers and adventurers alike, welcoming more than 4 million tourists each year. However, the next example isn't critical because it is likely to be intentional and its results are easily undone. In this example, a critical warning alerts users of potential irreversible data loss. The following is a good example of a critical warning because it meets the previously defined characteristics. Icons are not a way to decorate messages. Doing so draws attention to critical messages, makes critical and non-critical messages visually distinct, and is consistent with the Windows tone. To distinguish non-critical errors and warnings from critical ones, non-critical messages are usually displayed without an icon. They require correct handling now, because mistakes can't be easily fixed and may even be irreversible. They have unexpected or unintended consequences.User's time (a significant amount, such as 30 seconds or more).Privacy or control over confidential information.A valuable asset, such as data loss or financial loss. They involve potential loss of one or more of the following:.Critical errors and warnings have these characteristics: (Note that for accessibility reasons, this visual communication must always be redundant with another form, such as text or sound.) Users should be able to tell at a glance the nature of the information and the consequences of their response, so we must differentiate critical errors and warnings from their ordinary counterparts. Icons work best when used to communicate visually. While severity isn't a consideration when choosing among the error, warning, and information icons, severity is a factor in determining if a standard icon should be used at all. The main instruction text and icons should always match. Craft the main instruction or other corresponding text based on that focus, and then choose an icon (standard or otherwise) that matches the text. Typically, if an issue blocks the user from proceeding, it is presented as an error if the user can proceed, it's a warning. To determine the appropriate message type, focus on the most important aspect of the issue that users need to know or act upon. "You have configured Windows Internet Explorer to block unsigned ActiveX controls." (Phrased as a statement of fact.) "This page might not behave as expected because Windows Internet Explorer isn't configured to load unsigned ActiveX controls." or "Allow this page to install an unsigned ActiveX Control? Doing so from untrusted sources may harm your computer." (Both phrased as conditions that may cause future problems.) "This page cannot load an unsigned ActiveX control." (Phrased as an existing problem.) For example, suppose a Web page cannot load an unsigned ActiveX control based on the current Windows Internet Explorer configuration: Some issues can be presented as an error, warning, or information, depending on the emphasis and phrasing. So despite their difference in severity, "Incorrect font size" is an error, whereas "Continuing with this operation will set your house on fire" is a warning. Don't use warning icons as a way to "soften" minor errors. A condition that might cause a problem in the future.Ĭonsequently, an error message might take an error icon but never a warning icon. severityĬhoose standard icons based the message type, not the severity of the underlying issue. The remainder of this section explains how to think about standard icons in order to avoid these common mistakes. Doing so makes programs appear prone to hazard, and detracts from truly significant issues. Alarming users by giving warnings for minor issues or presenting routine questions as warnings.Using a standard icon when it is better to use no icon at all.Using a warning icon for minor errors. There are several factors in choosing the appropriate standard icon which in part explains why they are so often used incorrectly. Note: Guidelines related to icons are presented in a separate article. They are also commonly used on in-place messages and status bars. The standard icons are notable because they are built into many Windows application programming interfaces (APIs), such as task dialogs, message boxes, balloons, and notifications. The UI is presenting a condition that might cause a problem in the future. The user interface (UI) is presenting an error or problem that has occurred. The standard error, warning, information, and question mark icons. Standard icons are the error, warning, information, and question mark icons that are part of Windows. Much of the guidance still applies in principle, but the presentation and examples do not reflect our current design guidance. This design guide was created for Windows 7 and has not been updated for newer versions of Windows. However, people have different opinions about what the symbol itself means. The Vegvisir is a Viking symbol and translates from Icelandic to wayfinder. It is referenced in the Huld manuscript (An ancient Icelandic collection of. Read the number next the 'Read Size Here' line. These two notions of knowledge were identified by John Dewey (1916) as “records” of previous cultural accomplishments and engagement in active processes as represented by the phrase “to do.” For example, doing mathematics involves solving problems, abstracting, inventing, proving (see, e.g., Romberg, 1983). Today, students need to understand the current state of their knowledge and to build on it, improve it, and make decisions in the face of uncertainty (Talbert and McLaughlin, 1993). In short, the factory model affected the design of curriculum, instruction, and assessment in schools. The emulation of factory efficiency fostered the development of standardized tests for measurement of the “product,” of clerical work by teachers to keep records of costs and progress (often at the expense of teaching), and of “management” of teaching by central district authorities who had little knowledge of educational practice or philosophy (Callahan, 1962). Teachers were viewed as workers whose job was to carry out directives from their superiors-the efficiency experts of schooling (administrators and researchers). This approach attempted to sort the raw materials (the children) so that they could be treated somewhat as an assembly line. Children were regarded as raw materials to be efficiently processed by technical workers (the teachers) to reach the end product (Bennett and LeCompte, 1990 Callahan, 1962 Kliebard, 1975). School administrators were eager to make use of the “scientific” organization of factories to structure efficient classrooms. In the early 1900s, the challenge of providing mass education was seen by many as analogous to mass production in factories. Overall, the definition of functional literacy changed from being able to sign one’s name to word decoding to reading for new information (Resnick and Resnick, 1977) see Box 6.1. As in writing, it was not until relatively recently that analysis and interpretation of what is read became an expectation of skilled reading by all school children. It was not until the 1930s that the idea emerged of primary school students expressing themselves in writing (Alcorta, 1994 Schneuwly, 1994). Even then, writing instruction was largely aimed at giving children the capacity to closely imitate very simple text forms. It was not until the mid to late 1800s that writing began to be taught on a mass level in most European countries, and school children began to be asked to compose their own written texts. Instruction in writing focused on the mechanics of making notation as dictated by the teacher, transforming oral messages into written ones. Many cases, schools seem to be functioning as well as ever, but the challenges and expectations have changed quite dramatically (e.g., Bruer, 1993 Resnick, 1987).Ĭonsider the goals of schooling in the early 1800s. Later, we define these perspectives and explain how they relate to the preceding discussions in Chapters 1– 4. After discussing changes in goals, we explore the design of learning environments from four perspectives that appear to be particularly important given current data about human learning, namely, the degree to which learning environments are learner centered, knowledge centered, assessment centered, and community centered. A fundamental tenet of modern learning theory is that different kinds of learning goals require different approaches to instruction ( Chapter 3) new goals for education require changes in opportunities to learn. Everyone expects much more from today’s schools than was expected 100 years ago. We begin our discussion of learning environments by revisiting a point made in Chapter 1-that the learning goals for schools have undergone major changes during the past century. The focus in this chapter is on general characteristics of learning environments that need to be examined in light of new developments in the science of learning Chapter 7 provides specific examples of instruction in the areas of mathematics, science, and history-examples that make the arguments in the present chapter more concrete. Nevertheless, new developments in the science of learning raise important questions about the design of learning environments-questions that suggest the value of rethinking what is taught, how it is taught, and how it is assessed. Learning theory does not provide a simple recipe for designing effective learning environments similarly, physics constrains but does not dictate how to build a bridge (e.g., Simon, 1969). In this chapter we discuss implications of new knowledge about learning for the design of learning environments, especially schools. Nest is coming off a dominant 8 1/4-length victory over Cocktail Moments in the Ashland Stakes at Keeneland, her third in a row and second this year. Nest is one of three Todd Pletcher-trained horses in the field, along with Goddess of Fire (No. 4 post among 14 fillies and is the 5-2 favorite for Friday’s $1.25 million, 1 1/8th-mile race. Rich Strike and Rattle N Roll are also eligible pending withdrawals. The Hall of Famer’s 50th Derby starter and first since Bravazo (sixth in 2018) has work to do as a 30-1 long shot from the No. Wayne Lukas gets another chance for a fifth victory with Ethereal Road, who entered the field on Monday after Un Ojo withdrew. Meanwhile, four-time Derby-winning trainer D. This weekend’s races will happen without Baffert, whom Churchill Downs suspended for two years following Medina Spirit’s failed postrace drug test and eventual disqualification as the winner of last year’s Derby. So, if he is away cleanly Joel will let him be who he is.” “Joel is very confident in rhythm of the horse. “How long he stands in there, how long it takes to load, 150,000 people staring at him – it’s a lot,” Asmussen said. Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen simply hoped that Epicenter could break well from near the rail beneath jockey Joel Rosario and see where it leads. “They made us wait,“ said Yakteen, referring to his horses being among the final three chosen. Yakteen’s other entrant, Santa Anita Derby winner Taiba, is a 12-1 choice from the No. Messier, one of two colts trained by Derby first-timer Tim Yakteen after he took over their training this spring for suspended Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, is the 8-1 third choice and will start from the No. The horse is the 7-2 second betting choice after drawing the No. “We’re ready to go,” added Brown, who enters his eighth Derby seeking his first win after Good Magic finished third in 2018.Įpicenter was initially expected to be the Derby favorite following consecutive graded stakes wins, including the Louisiana Derby in March. Zandon has the “perfect” spot dead center with Flavien Prat aboard, Brown said. He has two wins, a second-place finish and a third in four career starts. The colt moved to second in Derby points behind Epicenter after rallying from the back of the field to win last month’s Blue Grass at Keeneland in Lexington. 10 post among 20 horses for the $3 million marquee event for 3-year-olds. Zandon, trained by Chad Brown, drew 3-1 odds Monday and will start from the No. (AP) - Zandon and filly Nest are the morning-line favorites for the 148th Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, respectively, at Churchill Downs, which will host both marquee races at full capacity for the first time since 2019. It's very advantageous to do the side-quests because it helps you level up. The game is extremely generous with its food and coin drops, and you can always purchase potions or extra food with your coins. If you want to consume food when engaging enemies, then you must flee otherwise you use the costlier potions. There are potions that instantly heal you, whereas the food items restore damage over time as long as you aren't attacking or receiving damage. There's also Magical Orbs which provide a limited use spell. Some weapons are special, indicated by their purple name, and trigger a special “Justice” attack when charged. The elements are Nature, Fire, Ice, and Undeath whatever that means. You may still want to make minor tweaks to gain extra elemental resistance, but I found it's fine to auto-equip. There's an option to auto-equip armour, but not weapons. Your equipment is the typical RPG style so you have helm, gloves, boots, chest armour, ring and necklace. Further in, you are told that alternating attacks gives you a combo bonus which deals more damage.Īs you kill enemies, you gain experience and they drop coins and loot. So at first you just slash at things, but later you are told you can block. The mechanics are explained over time, although you have these abilities from the start. It seems one of those Nintendo-style co-op modes where the second player is more of an assistant rather than a unique player. The game is designed for single-player but does have a co-op mode. I only used a controller because I found that to be a more comfortable option in the first game. You can play with keyboard and mouse, or with a controller. You are greeted with a Lord Of The Rings-style narrated intro which tells you about DeathSpank and his quest to claim all the “Thongs of Virtue” which are underpants with special powers. The game is a humorous hack-and-slash RPG. Thongs Of Virtue is the second game in the Deathspank series. |
